17. The impossibility of reaching the fruit of the path without hirī and ottappa
The Seventh Nipāta of the Anguttaranikāya scripture has the following on the impossibility of attaining the fruit of the path without the influence of both hirī and ottappa.
ဤတရားႏွစ္ပါးမရွိလွ်င္ မဂ္ဖုိလ္တုိင္ေအာင္ မရနုိင္ေၾကာင္းကုိ အဂၤုတၱဳိရ္ သတၱကနိပါတ္ ပါဠိေတာ္၌ -
In effect this means that without hirī and ottappa, because they are the way to restraint of the senses, in their absence this restraint cannot exist.
ဟိရီ ဩတၱပၸ မရွိလွ်င္၊ဣေျႏၵကုိေစာင့္စည္းေၾကာင္းျဖစ္ေသာ ဟိရီ ဩတၱပၸ မရွိေသာေၾကာင့္ဣေျႏၵကုိ ေစာင့္စည္းျခင္း ဣျႏၵိယသံ၀ရ မျဖစ္နုိင္၊
If there is no restraint of the senses, which is the way to virtue, without restraint there can be no virtue.
Without this virtue, which is basic to sense restraint, the senses cannot be restrained. Without this restraint, which is the way to sīla, since it is not there, there can be no sīla.
ဣေျႏၵကုိေစာင့္စည္း မရွိလွ်င္ သီလျဖစ္ေၾကာင္းဣေျႏၵကုိေစာင့္စည္း မရွိေသာေၾကာင့္ သီလမရွိနုိင္၊
Sīla is the way to proper concentration and therefore without sīla there can be no proper concentration.
သီလမရွိ လွ်င္ သမၼာသမာဓိျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း သီလမရွိေသာေၾကာင့္ သမၼာသမာဓိမရွိနုိင္၊
Proper concentration is the way to vipassanā (insight, particularly in meditation) wisdom, but since there is no proper concentration, there can be no vipassanā wisdom.
သမၼာသမာ ဓိ မရွိလွ်င္ ယထာဘူတ၀ိပႆနာၪာဏ္ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း သမၼာသမာဓိ မရွိ ေသာေၾကာင့္ ယထာဘူတ၀ိပႆနာ ၪာဏ္ မရွိနုိင္၊
If there is no objective vipassanā wisdom, which is the way to nibbidāvirāga (disenchantment with the world), without this wisdom there can be no nibbidāvirāga.
ယထာဘူတ၀ိပႆနာၪာဏ္ မရွိလွ်င္ နိဗၺိဒါ၀ိရာဂ ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း ယထာဘူတ ၀ိပႆနာ ၪာဏ္ မရွိေသာေၾကာင့္ နိဗၺိဒါ၀ိရာဂ မရွိနုိင္၊
Without nibbidāvirāga which is the way to the revelation of pure wisdom (vimuttiñānadassana) there can be no revelation (dassana) of wisdom, since the nibbidāvirāga is not there.
နိဗၺိဒါ ၀ိရာဂမရွိလွ်င္ ၀ိမုတိၱၪာဏဒႆနၪာဏ္ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း နိဗၺိဒါ၀ိရာဂ မရွိေသာေၾကာင့္ ၀ိမုတၱိၪာဏဒႆနၪာဏ္မရွိနုိင္။ ဟူလုိ။
